The Farmer is the farming newspaper run by the Shropshire Newspapers group. It covers a wide swathe of country
form the Welsh Hills in the west up to the Peak District of Derbyshire and the Staffordshire Moorlands and
from the Cheshire Plain in the north down to the south of Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
The region includes a wide range of agricultural activity from large arable farms and dairy herds to
horticultural businesses and market gardens and beef and lamb producers.
The paper’s heartland is Shropshire, the largest inland county in England with a hugely varied pattern of
farming. As a regional farming journal the Farmer aims to inform and entertain and is concerned with both
the major national issues which influence agriculture and with the local interests and activities of groups
and individuals.
The Farmer’s strength lies in its grass roots approach to farming journalism and its dedication to West
Midlands and mid Wales farming matters. Turn the pages and you will find something about someone you know
or something that has happened in your area.
The editor is Heather Jones who is based at the Ketley headquarters of the Shropshire Newspapers group.
A Shropshire farmer’s daughter, Heather has been an agricultural writer for more years that she cares to
remember, and is a former farming broadcaster with BBC local radio.
She is always eager to hear from farmers and other readers about anything that is going on in the region.
The Farmer has four regular columnists - all of them farmers giving a grass roots view of farming in their region.
Clive Langford-Mycock writes A View from the Hills. He is based on the edge of the Peak District of
Derbyshire which has its own set of problems as the most visited National Park which can sometimes be
a headache for farmers.
Keith Stevens is the Staffordshire link, familiar for his broadcasting talents. He runs a small farm with
pedigree Texel sheep and grows soft fruit. He is in close touch with the farming community in his area
and reports from events in the area.
Tim Cooke runs a large arable farming enterprise in Shropshire and pens a monthly farm diary for The Farmer,
detailing the trials and tribulations of farming in these challenging times.
Reporting on the farming scene in Herefordshire is Nigel Box, a young farmer who divides his time between
the family mixed livestock farm near Bosbury and his day time job with 7Y machinery co-operative.
The Farmer is written for farmers and their families in the region - so
let us have your news and views now.
The Farmer also publishes Rural Recollections, an annual memorabilia newspaper, and Countryside Matters -
a glossy magazine for country lovers. Look out for them at your newsagent.
